Understanding Microsoft Enterprise Mode

Introduced in the spring of 2014, “Enterprise Mode” was released as an Internet Explorer 11 update for Windows 7+ and Windows Server 2008+ to provide an enhanced, comprehensive, centrally controllable way for organizations to control the compatibility behavior or IE 11 for Windows 7/8.1 and IE11 and Edge for Windows 10.

The configuration options the user has access to for IE 11 on an individual workstation have not changed – through the browser settings, group policy or registry entries, but Enterprise Mode – via Group Policies – provides a means to override those settings.

As shipped, a Windows 10 workstation ships with the same defaults as Windows 8/8.1, with Enterprise Mode not enabled. A user should see no difference between a new installation of Windows 8.1 vs. 10.

IBM Cognos 10.2.X and Analytics 11.X and SharePoint 2010/2013/2016 will operate as expected as will use of QueryVision SharePoint Web Parts for IBM Cognos to embed either IBM Cognos 10.2.X or 11.X in any version of SharePoint.

Note that using IBM Cognos URLs directly in SharePoint without QueryVision will not work for the following combinations whether using the default workstation values or Enterprise Mode

  • SharePoint 2010/2013/2016 & ICA 11.X

Recommendations for Enterprise Mode:

Note: this applies to Windows 7/8.1/10 or Windows [Server] 2008+

  • Single Sign On is required

Use Intranet mode for SharePoint and IBM Cognos servers to ensure that users windows credentials (IWA) are passed to SharePoint and IBM Cognos (otherwise user will be challenged by each of SharePoint and Cognos servers for user credentials). This assumes that the following (default) IE settings are enabled:

    • Security Tab – > [any zone] -> Custom level…

Authentication/Logon/Automatic logon only in Intranet Zone (enabled)

    • Advanced Tab – > Security

Enable Integrated Windows Authentication (enabled)

  • Use IE 11 – As Windows 10/Edge is not official supported for IBM Cognos, force IE 11 use on Windows 10 for IBM Cognos or the combination of IBM Cognos & SharePoint 2010, 2013 & 2016 via the Group Policy “Send all intranet sites to Internet Explorer 11”
  • Recommended Enterprise Modes – any of the following can be used:
    • Default Mode
    • IE8 Enterprise Mode
    • IE 7 Enterprise Mode

The reason only these modes are recommended is they allow the web page to set the document mode via X-UA-Compatible, which IBM Cognos 10.2.X, 11.X and all SharePoint versions require. Enterprise Modes such as IE10 force IE10 mode and override X-UA-Compatible.

  • Windows 10 and mixed use of Internet and Intranet for IBM Cognos and/or SharePoint – use Enterprise mode for both IE 11 and Edge and include any Internet sites used for IBM Cognos/SharePoint to be included in the Intranet list if SSO is being used.
